poem of the day January 11

Sitting on the altar
among many other Buddhas
was a very fat laughing Buddha
made of wax with a wick
sticking out the top of its heavenly head
It made me think of the fragile
nature of life, the worry of life
how everything can change
at any instant with the strike of a match.
Yet there was the happy wax Buddha
surrounded by bronze indestructible bothers
sitting unconcerned with its karma
a full smile brimming from his jolly lips
aware of nothing but the joy within

the joy of each passing moment
